Green light for Trump – may deport tens of thousands
The US Supreme Court supports President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the protected status of around 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians.
The decision from the Supreme Court gives the Department of Homeland Security the right to quickly revoke the temporary protected status, a program that covers a total of 1.3 million people from 17 countries.
The government has already revoked the protection for people from 13 countries, including Venezuela. The protection gives people the right to temporarily stay and work in the US if their home countries are affected by war and natural disasters.
The revocation for Haiti and Syria occurs despite the fact that the countries are still considered extremely unsafe.
Four Haitian women, who were deported from the United States in February, were found decapitated and dumped in a river a few months later, a lawyer said, citing court documents.
