Iran Attacks American Targets in the Middle East
Iran has attacked American military bases in Jordan, the country's Revolutionary Guard says, several media outlets report. The escalation comes after the United States attacked Iran in response to the shooting down of an American helicopter.
The attacks are said to be aimed at 21 targets in Jordan, including the Al Azraq air base in the eastern part of the country. Iran is also said to have shot down a drone in the Iranian area of Jam.
According to the Jordanian military, five missiles were fired at the air base during the night, Sky News reports. However, no one was injured or killed in the attacks.
Kuwait's military also states that their air defense system was activated after hostile objects were detected, they write on X. Air raid sirens have also been heard in Bahrain.
Donald Trump lashes out at Iran – threatens new attacks on energy facilities
Donald Trump launches a harsh attack on Iran in a new post on Truth Social. He writes, among other things, that Iran has been “totally” defeated and that the country is “dead”.
The president also writes that Iran has taken too long to negotiate a peace agreement with the US.
“Now they will have to pay the price”, his post states.
In an interview with Fox News, the president says that he is close to ordering new attacks on Iran’s energy facilities and bridges.
The statements come after the US attacked targets in Iran in response to the shooting down of an American helicopter outside Oman on Tuesday. Iran responded with its own attacks on American targets in the Middle East.
Expert: Fighting will continue unless US listens to Iran's demands
The US must be prepared to discuss Iran's demands for sanctions relief if there is to be any peace agreement. This is what Danny Citrinowicz, former head of Israel's military intelligence, believes.
- If Washington does not want to accept the situation, it should also realize what the alternative is: continued confrontations with Iran that could eventually develop into a situation that no one can control, he tells The Guardian.
Last night's attacks between the US and Iran show how fragile the situation is, and how easily the conflict can escalate, says Citrinowicz.
Analysis: The countries mark where the red lines are
The attacks between Israel and the US and Iran in recent days are a sign that the warring parties want to mark where the red lines are. This is according to Danish DR correspondent Puk Damsgård. All the different parts of the conflict in the Middle East are also clearly interconnected, she believes.
– What is happening in Lebanon and what Israel and Hezbollah are doing have direct consequences for the situation in Iran and the Gulf states.
Abbas Al Lawati also writes about the countries' red lines in an analysis in CNN. By attacking Israel in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon, Iran has made it clear that it is not only attacks on the country's territory that will lead to retaliation, he believes.
Al Lawati also believes that the Iranian regime has changed its strategy:
"A new generation of leaders is increasingly abandoning the cautious and reactive strategy that has long characterized the Islamic Republic's approach to its opponents."
SVT's Carl Fridh Kleberg believes that both the US and Iran want to sign a peace agreement, despite the new attacks.
– It is of course a little less comforting that both countries want to see an agreement on their own terms.
