Prime Minister: This is a historic victory
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is happy after winning the country's parliamentary elections. At a press conference, he says that he has won a "historic victory" and that Armenia faces a bright future.
Pashinyan has promised to move closer to the West, while maintaining relations with Russia. He also wants to "create lasting institutions for peace" with neighboring Azerbaijan.
- The Armenian people have voted for regional prosperity and cooperation, and I hope that this will receive a positive response from Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Armenian Prime Minister declares himself winner
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declares himself winner of the parliamentary elections, reports Reuters.
Not all votes have been counted yet, but early results show Pashinyan’s centrist party leading with just over 54 percent of the vote.
The pro-Russian opposition party Strong Armenia looks set to become the country’s second largest party with around 22 percent of the vote.
This year’s voter turnout was high, with 59 percent of eligible Armenians going to the polls.
