Political situation in Peru

Shocking expected when Peru elects new president – again

Today, 27 million Peruvians go to the polls to elect a new president. It is the ninth time in ten years that Peru has elected a president and this time the election is between right-wing leader Keiko Fujimori and left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez, writes The Guardian.

Peru has recently been grappling with increasing problems. Increased crime, corruption scandals and widespread poverty are three of many burning challenges, regardless of who gets to move into the presidential palace.

In the first round of the election, Fujimori received 17 percent of the vote, which was five percentage points more than Roberto Sánchez. According to opinion polls, however, it is completely even between Fujimori and Sánchez ahead of Sunday's election.

Controversial president's daughter to run for election for the fourth time

She has run three times, each time she has lost. Ahead of today's presidential election in Peru, Keiko Fujimori has been the clear favorite – at least until Thursday when a new opinion poll suddenly pointed to a close race, writes al-Jazeera.

Keiko Fujimori is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced to prison for human rights violations during his time in power. The opposition fears that the 51-year-old daughter will resort to the same methods as her father if she wins.

Healthcare worker Eduardo Salazar is one of many who believe so, and he will still vote for her in the election, reports the TV channel:

- I think she wants to be like her father, but this time I'm voting for her so that she stops trying. Because she won't let Peru develop without her.
