Jamaica power outage
The Jamaica Public Service Company, the country's sole energy supplier, said the power outage broke out at 9 pm on Friday night and that the power outage affected all of the country's 2.8 million residents.
The company's boss, Hugh Grant, said on Saturday that the cause of the power outage was being investigated. The likely cause was lightning strikes near switchgear and transformer stations - which in turn affected the power grid.
Jamaica rarely experiences power outages due to economic or political reasons, like neighboring Cuba. However, severe hurricanes, such as Melissa last October, have caused total power outages in the past.
