The police in Finland have completed the investigation into the two cable breaches in the Gulf of Finland at the end of 2025. The result is that four people are suspected of crimes.

The crime categories are aggravated sabotage, attempted aggravated sabotage and aggravated disruption of postal and telecommunications traffic, the Central Criminal Police Office writes in a press release. It is now up to the Deputy Prosecutor General to decide on prosecution.

Three of the suspects are still subject to travel bans.

The damage to two data communication cables was discovered between Helsinki and Tallinn in Estonia's economic zone on New Year's Eve.

Suspicions that the freighter Fitburg – sailing under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and coming from St. Petersburg, Russia – was behind the cable damage were raised relatively quickly. It was stopped and ordered to port in Finland.
