The White House wanted to declare 2.7 million living people dead
The Trump administration planned to declare 2.7 million people in the United States dead.
The only problem was that they were still alive.
The move was allegedly an attempt to pressure immigrants to leave the country, a former head of the Social Security Administration told the Washington Post.
Using one of the government's most important databases, people would be deleted from the US financial system. In this way, they could potentially be cut off from wages, banking services, government benefits and other services.
Jeremiah Schofield had worked at the agency when he chose to resign in October.
He tells the Washington Post that the Trump administration was preparing plans to register about 2.7 million living people as dead. Among them were both American citizens and immigrants with permanent residence permits.
"Couldn't believe my ears"
Jeremiah Schofield refused to help implement the plans, and the agency's lawyers reportedly warned that such a forgery could violate federal law.
The plan was reportedly part of Elon Musk's Doge's work, whose mission was to reduce the country's spending.
Schofield has provided details in a 49-page whistleblower report to the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Permanent Investigations Committee. In it, he writes, among other things, that the plan would have "devastating consequences" for the people involved.
He tells of a meeting in which a Doge official reportedly said the goal was to "make immigrants so unhappy that they would leave the country themselves or seek help from the Social Security office, where they could be arrested."
- That conversation was one of the most disappointing I've had in my 25-year career, he tells the Washington Post.
- I was shocked and couldn't believe my ears.
Does not comment on the information
Lauren Bis, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, did not respond to questions from the newspaper about the plan, but said that information sharing between agencies can be beneficial. She also criticizes the Biden administration's immigration policies.
- Information sharing between agencies is crucial to identifying who is in our country, including violent criminals, to determine what threats to public safety and terrorism may exist so that we can neutralize them, and to map what public benefits these foreigners are taking advantage of at the expense of taxpayers, she says.
