Negotiations
Zelenskyj in place at next week's G7 meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj will participate in the G7 meeting in France next week. This was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron, according to AFP.
- It is very important for us because we need to restore unity within the G7 in support for Ukraine in the various aspects of the war, including the need for negotiations, says Macron.
The statement refers to the different views that European leaders and US President Donald Trump have on support for Ukraine and the path to peace, writes AFP.
The leaders of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have also been invited.
Security around the Baltic Sea
Russian ambassador hits back: "A lie"
Russia's ambassador to Denmark, Vladimir Barbin, does not like the Danish DR's reporting on the Russian armament along the border with the Nordic and Baltic countries. The documentary “War Plan Europe” shows that the Kremlin is preparing for a possible war against the NATO countries around the Baltic Sea.
“Claims that Russia would soon decide to attack one or more NATO countries are a lie,” he writes in a comment to the channel.
DR, together with SVT, NRK and Estonian Delfi, has examined Russian rearmament. Using satellite images, the media have shown that more and more barracks, warehouses and military vehicles are appearing on the Russian border with Norway, Finland and the Baltic countries.
Russia is rearming along the border with northern Europe
The Russian military is rearming along the border with the Nordic and Baltic countries for a possible war with the NATO countries around the Baltic Sea. This is shown by an examination that Danish DR has carried out together with SVT, Norwegian NRK and Estonian Delfi.
Satellite images show that Russia is rearming with a total of eight divisions in Sweden’s vicinity. These are locations near the Russian border with northern Norway, Finland and Lithuania.
Finnish Army Chief Pasi Välimäki tells SVT that the rearmament could lead to the number of Russian forces near the Nordic and Baltic regions increasing from just over 20,000 to around 80,000.
- It is a threat that we should take seriously, Must chief Thomas Nilsson tells the channel.
Security in Europe
Sources: EU wants to replace key US capabilities in NATO
EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius wants to develop an initiative in which EU countries jointly finance military capabilities that are currently provided by the US, sources tell Politico.
This includes aerial refueling of fighter jets in the air, a capability for which European countries are largely dependent on the US. It also applies to military command and control systems, space-based intelligence gathering and satellite reconnaissance.
Kubilius now wants EU member states to agree to allocate part of their defense budgets to build up equivalent European capabilities. According to Politico's sources, the investment could amount to around 500 billion euros, equivalent to around 5,500 billion kronor.
