Chinese ships have entered the area around the disputed Taiping Island, which is controlled by Taiwan, for the first time. The Taiwanese coast guard said the ships were in the waters around the island for 15 minutes before being turned away.

Taiwan itself says the waters four kilometers off the coast of Taiping are “forbidden” to other countries.

In a statement, the coast guard condemned the incident and accused China of “harassing” Taiwan and its territory, AFP reports. China claims all of Taiwan as part of its territory and claims most of the South China Sea.

Taiwan, China, the Philippines and Vietnam all claim Taiping Island.
