Macron stands up to the Supreme Court – demands new “robust” ban on social media for children

French President Emmanuel Macron is demanding a new bill banning social media for children, Le Monde reports. The French Supreme Court has today stopped the ban that was supposed to come into effect in September.

“The president’s determination to implement the reform by spring 2027 remains absolute,” the Elysée Palace wrote in a statement.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has been tasked with producing a new, “legally robust” bill as soon as possible.

According to the court, the law constitutes “a disproportionate infringement of freedom of expression and communication”. The risks to the health and safety of minors have not been clarified, the court writes according to France Info.

The ban was an important promise from President Emmanuel Macron, who called it “a major step forward”.

The High Court did not rule on the mobile phone ban in secondary schools which was part of the same legislative package, writes BFMTV.
