Egypt has declared war, according to the Yemeni Houthi movement.

On Monday, Egypt’s parliament gave the green light for President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi to “take necessary measures” to support Saudi Arabia, which is facing intensified attacks from the Houthi movement. According to al-Sisi, these are defensive measures.

“Egypt and its parliament have declared their support for what is termed the defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and in doing so, they are declaring war against the Republic of Yemen,” writes Mohammed Ali al-Huthi, a member of the movement’s politburo, on Telegram.

The Iranian-backed Houthi movement controls a large part of Yemen and is at war with Saudi Arabia and the internationally recognized Yemeni government, which the Saudis support. Houthi forces have stepped up attacks against Saudi Arabia and restricted maritime traffic in the Red Sea—a situation that is also severely affecting Egypt.
