Report: Trump Considers New Concession to Russia
US President Donald Trump is considering lifting sanctions on Russia’s primary state-owned investment fund, according to individuals familiar with the negotiations who spoke to The New York Times.
One source told the newspaper that this would be a step toward “improving relations between the US and Russia and helping to bring an end to the war” (in Ukraine).
The US has long viewed the fund as one of the Kremlin’s most powerful tools for exerting international influence.
Lifting the sanctions would represent a departure from the US strategy, which has utilized economic sanctions to compel Russia to change course.
Earlier in October, Trump lifted sanctions on Russia as part of an agreement concerning Russian diesel exports.
