Reports: Bolsonaro has fled to the USA
The police prohibited Flávio Bolsonaro from leaving Brazil.
He promised to comply and to surrender his passport.
Now, it is reported that he has fled to the USA.
Flávio Bolsonaro has reportedly fled Brazil following the election defeat, CNN Brasil reports.
He is said to be en route to the USA with his wife and two daughters, according to sources close to the family.
The sources state that the senator fears being arrested in his home country, following a Supreme Court justice’s order for him to surrender his passport.
Stopped on the street by police
Yesterday, Bolsonaro stated on Instagram that the Federal Police stopped him in the middle of the street, prohibited him from leaving the country, and ordered him to hand over his passport.
At the time, the senator said he would comply with the order.
"I will defend myself against this absurdity, which is a clear attempt to intimidate me. But no one will silence me," he said.
However, that did not happen, and he kept his passport.
Private flight to Argentina
Bolsonaro reportedly crossed the border via a private flight to Argentina, according to the Argentine newspaper Infobae.
A few hours later, both his regular passport and his diplomatic passport were annulled by Brazilian authorities.
Following the election defeat to leftist leader Lula da Silva, Flávio Bolsonaro has refused to concede. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has also expressed suspicion regarding the election results.
The former president remarked yesterday that it looked "corrupt." “Elections must be unambiguous, and this looked very bad in my eyes,” Trump said, without providing any evidence.
Under investigation for foreign interference
Earlier today, Flávio Dino, a justice on Brazil’s Supreme Court, ordered the police to investigate suspected foreign interference in Bolsonaro’s campaign, according to several Brazilian media outlets.
According to the justice, there are indications that social media algorithms have been used to favor or disadvantage certain candidates.
Flávio Dino also wants the police to investigate foreign political support provided in exchange for the country’s rare earth metals.
