Palestinian elections announced – in a year’s time
Palestinian elections—the first in two decades—will be held next autumn, President Mahmoud Abbas has announced.
Elections for the Palestinian Authority’s legislative assembly were scheduled for November 28 of this year but have been postponed.
A presidential election was expected to be announced for the spring, but it will take place somewhat later than that.
Both elections will be held on September 11, 2027, the Palestinian Authority’s presidential office announced, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. President Abbas has reportedly issued a decree to this effect, meaning Palestinians will be able to elect a successor to the 90-year-old leader.
The last election was held in 2006 and ended in a brief armed conflict between the Fatah party and the Islamist group Hamas. Since then, Fatah, led by President Abbas, has governed the Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank indefinitely, while Hamas has held power in Gaza.
