Sweden sends Gripen to NATO nuclear exercise
Sweden will participate with JAS 39 Gripen aircraft in NATO’s annual exercise Steadfast Noon, the government announced in a press release.
The exercise, which begins on October 13 in Italy, is an annual event aimed at "ensuring that NATO’s nuclear deterrence remains credible and effective." Fighter aircraft from allied nations capable of carrying nuclear weapons participate, but no live nuclear weapons are involved in the exercise.
"The purpose of nuclear capability is ultimately to preserve peace, prevent blackmail, and deter aggression. By participating in Steadfast Noon, Sweden contributes to the security of the entire alliance," Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) said in a statement.
Sweden is participating with Gripen aircraft and personnel from the Swedish Armed Forces.
