Trump: Putin wants a deal – Zelenskyy doesn't
Donald Trump claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to see a peace agreement with Ukraine. The US President continues to lash out at Volodymyr Zelenskyy after the Ukrainian president pushed back against the US decision to import Russian diesel.
"Russia wants to reach a deal, but for some reason, Zelenskyy doesn't," says Trump.
Trump wants Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil refineries and has expressed the view that Zelenskyy should be replaced.
Zelenskyy and Ukraine have repeatedly stated that they want to hold peace talks, but Russia has shown limited willingness to cooperate.
Trump’s diesel move reportedly caught Ukraine off guard: "Sat there like idiots"
Trump’s negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner informed Ukraine of US plans to lift sanctions on Russian diesel during a meeting on Friday, the *Kyiv Independent* reports. The news was reportedly received with great surprise by the Ukrainian side, as the delegation had traveled to the US to discuss a possible peace agreement. Several Ukrainian sources confirmed this to the newspaper.
"It wasn't just our delegation there, but a European one too. Everyone just sat there like idiots," says a source.
Trump’s decision has strained relations between the US and Ukraine. Zelenskyy has been highly critical, and the US President has responded by, among other things, suggesting that Ukraine should find a new president. Another Ukrainian source suggests that Ukraine could have agreed to a deal to stop attacking Russian energy infrastructure if Russia took the same measures.
"It was so damn stupid to bury the idea of an energy truce like this," the source says regarding Trump's decision.
