Reactions to the Peace Prize

Human rights chief: "A prize for everyone defending human rights"

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk congratulates this year's Peace Prize laureate Navanethem "Navi" Pillay and says the joy at UN headquarters is palpable.

"If you walk around here, you can sense the emotion. There is happiness and immense joy that one of our own has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize," he says, according to The Guardian.

Human rights lawyer Pillay has served as, among other roles, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Türk believes the prize holds symbolic importance.

"It is a prize for all those around the world who dedicate their lives to defending human rights, often at great risk to their own safety."

Peace Prize laureate’s dig at Trump: "Maybe I’ll share it"

"Navi" Pillay takes a dig at US President Donald Trump after being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In a video shared on X by Amnesty Secretary General Agnes Callamard, Pillay receives thunderous applause following the announcement.

"If you clap a little more, maybe I’ll share this prize with Trump," she says.

Last year, Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado dedicated her Peace Prize to Trump—a move that made major headlines.

The 85-year-old human rights lawyer Pillay was awarded this year's Peace Prize for her work against war crimes and crimes against humanity. – I said it had to be a joke.

Israeli anger over the prize: "Goebbels is applauding"

The Israeli Foreign Ministry is furious that human rights lawyer Navi Pillay has been awarded this year's Peace Prize. Pillay was one of three UN experts who concluded last year that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.

Israel denies allegations of genocide and accuses Pillay of being part of a "politically motivated demonization of Israel."

In its statement, the Foreign Ministry writes that the Peace Prize is being used to "legitimize hatred and prejudice."

"Now that the Nobel Committee has rewarded the greatest lie of the 21st century, Joseph Goebbels is applauding from hell," the Israeli Foreign Ministry writes, referring to the Nazi propaganda minister from the 1930s and 40s.
