U.S. immigration enforcement agency ICE states that the man shot and wounded by its officers in New York on Thursday was a wanted individual under supervised release.

"He attempted to flee, and we were therefore forced to use force," says Markwayne Mullin, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.

The operation by the immigration enforcement agency took place on Thursday afternoon local time in the Bronx borough of New York. The shooting marks ICE's first use of lethal force in the city and has sparked strong reactions.

The shot man's five-year-old son was in the car at the time of the shooting.

On Friday, ICE defended the operation at a joint press briefing with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

"He refused to comply with orders to exit the vehicle. He used the vehicle by driving it toward two ICE vehicles. Our trained agents believed their lives and the lives of the public were in danger, and subsequently fired shots," says Marcos Charles of ICE.

The agency further states that they were unaware the boy was in the back seat. The boy was not injured in the incident.

The man sustained superficial neck injuries and is currently in custody at a facility outside New York, according to authorities. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has requested that ICE cease its operations in the city.

"No, we will not cease our operations (in the city)," says Markwayne Mullin.
