65 police officers injured in Berlin: "Turn Neukölln into Gaza - burn everything down" 

65 police officers were injured during pro-Palestinian protests in Berlin on the night of Thursday, authorities said according to AFP. 

 

The demonstrations started on Wednesday afternoon in the immigrant-dense district of Neukölln, despite the authorities in the city banning demonstrations in support of Palestine.  

 

According to the newspaper Bild, a message went out on Telegram, specifically calling on men to "turn Neukölln into Gaza" and "burn everything".  

 

The police officers were injured with, among other things, stones and flammable liquids. According to a spokesperson for the police, 174 people were arrested, of which 65 will be prosecuted. Burning objects were thrown - police responded with water cannons

Jordan cow turns - will seek a new vote  

Trump supporter Jim Jordan has again changed course and announced that he will seek a new vote to clinch the Speakership of the House of Representatives, the New York Times reports. 

It comes just hours after he announced he was withdrawing from the race for the time being in favor of giving interim Speaker Patrick McHenry expanded powers — something that didn't sit well with many Republicans. 

Lacking a regular speaker, Congress has been unable to make important decisions, for example on the issue of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Russian-American journalist arrested in Russia  

A Russian-American journalist who works for Radio Free Europe has been arrested in Russia and is accused, among other things, of having collected information about Russian military activities, several media reports.  

 

In a statement, the radio network demands the immediate release of the arrested editor Alsu Kurmasheva "so that she can return to her family", writes AFP.  

 

According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Kurmasheva was in a temporary detention center in Russia as of Wednesday night but is likely to be moved to a detention center shortly. 

 

"Journalism is not a crime and the arrest of Kurmashevas is further evidence of Russia's determination to stifle independent reporting," writes CPJ's Gulnoza Said in a statement. 

 

Russia has not provided any evidence for its allegations.

Trump's ex-lawyer pleads guilty to election fraud  

Donald Trump's former lawyer Sidney Powell pleads guilty to six counts of trying to influence the 2020 election results in Georgia, AP reports.  

Powell is, like Trump, one of the 19 defendants in the case. She is the second to have entered into an agreement with the prosecution. Last month, former election official Scott Hall pleaded guilty to five counts, in return for a sentence of five years' probation and the obligation to testify in the continuing legal process.  

The prosecution is recommending that Powell be sentenced to six years of probation and the same obligation to testify.  

One of the crimes Powell admits to is that in January 2021, he hacked vote counting systems in Coffee County, Georgia.  

Trump and the other 17 defendants in the case have pleaded not guilty

Bolsonaro Congress panel: Indict Bolsonaro for attempted coup  

Brazil's ex-president Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of attempted coup. A panel in Brazil's Congress is now recommending that he be prosecuted for instigating the riots in the country in connection with the last election, AP reports.  

It was on January 8 that thousands of Bolsonaro supporters entered the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court, destroying furniture and breaking windows. The perpetrators claimed that the election was rigged in favor of Lula da Silva, who narrowly won the presidential election. 

Bolsonaro himself refused to attend Lula's installation and instead traveled to the United States. He denies involvement in the riots.  

- It is completely biased. It is absurd, Bolsonaro comments on the panel's recommendation.  

The congressional panel's recommendation should be seen as symbolic and is aimed at the police and prosecutors.
