Tsunami warning after strong earthquake
A strong earthquake has been measured off the coast of Mexico and Guatemala, according to the USGS.
The US has issued a tsunami warning for areas within 300 km of the epicenter.
The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 is said to have occurred at 16:48 and had a depth of ten kilometers. Several smaller earthquakes have since been reported, according to the USGS.
After the earthquake, the US has issued a tsunami warning for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and the United States, Reuters reports.
– It must have shaken quite a bit, but since it is at sea there should not be much damage, says Björn Lund, seismologist at Uppsala University.
If the tremors of this magnitude had occurred under land, it could have had devastating consequences, Lund explains. The earthquake is said to have occurred about 48 kilometers out to sea.
