Reform UK investigated for breach of donation rules
British police are expanding their investigation into Nigel Farage's far-right party Reform UK.
The charges relate to breaches of foreign donation rules.
The new suspicions have been raised after a revelation on Channel 4 last week. The investigation, in which the television channel's journalists posed as American businessmen, shows how a senior representative of Reform UK appears to be discussing how the law could be circumvented to funnel money from the American financier to the party. Farage was also present at the meeting.
British electoral law dictates that parties may only accept donations from British voters or companies registered in the UK.
“Investigators have assessed the information provided and determined that there are potential offences that require investigation,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
Farage’s adviser Dan Jukes and the party’s policy director James Orr have been suspended following the TV revelations.
In a separate clip from Channel 4, Orr is seen discussing how the American financier could pay for opinion polls commissioned by the party.
Reform UK said on Wednesday that it “denies any wrongdoing and will cooperate fully with the investigation.”
The party and Farage are already under investigation for undisclosed donations received ahead of the 2024 general election.
