Over twenty people have died in a serious accident in Mestre, Italy.  

For an unknown reason, a bus has fallen ten meters from a viaduct and caught fire. 

A major rescue operation is underway. 

The serious accident occurred in the Italian city of Mestre at 19:30 on Tuesday evening local time.  

At least 21 people have died and many are injured, reports La Repubblica. Children must be among the dead. 

The bus is said to have fallen about ten meters from a viaduct and then caught fire. The circumstances surrounding how the accident may have happened are still unclear.

According to Corrire Del Veneto, the bus was full and a major rescue operation is underway at the scene of the accident. 

- There are too many dead, too many, says one of the firefighters on site to Corrire Del Veneto  

"A Tragedy" 

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni describes the incident as a tragedy and expresses her deepest condolences to all those affected.  

Venice Mayor Luigi Bruganaro told La Repubblica that some of the dead were tourists.  

- It looks like there were many tourists on board and we have found Ukrainian documents, he says.

It is currently unclear if any Swedes were on board the bus.  

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of information about a bus accident in Venice, Italy. The Foreign Ministry and the embassy in Rome are following the incident. We currently have no knowledge of any injured or dead Swedes," writes the Foreign Ministry in a message to Aftonbladet.
