The election in the United States

Snipers and drones must protect election workers

Arizona's election headquarters will resemble a "fortress" when vote counting begins in November, a consequence of the many death threats received by election workers in the US state after the 2020 election, says Bill Gates, a high-ranking official and Arizona Republican, to CNN.

The polls in Maricopa County, Arizona, will be protected by bulletproof glass doors and double fences. The premises will be monitored by cameras. Outside, snipers will be placed on rooftops, and a fleet of police drones will be at the ready. That kind of action was completely unthinkable just a few years ago.

- It reflects the reality of the 2024 election, says Bill Gates.

Gates himself came under fire for hate and threats after he dismissed false claims that officials helped "steal the election" from Donald Trump in 2020.

Historian: Trump builds on Reagan's legacy

For many, former US President Ronald Reagan has become a symbol of a more innocent and less divisive era in American politics. But a new biography by historian Max Boot, a former adviser to several top Republican presidential campaigns, challenges that image. In fact, Reagan paved the way for Donald Trump, says the author to The Guardian.

Despite big differences between the former presidents, there are also many similarities between the men, says Boot, noting that Trump "doesn't come from Mars". Perhaps the most striking similarity is the men's backgrounds as TV personalities, another that they are both populists. Reagan was also no stranger to presenting half-truths as pure fact, and his policies favored the wealthy in society.

Ironically, Ronald Reagan would be really worried if he saw what Trump has done to the party, says Boot.

- If Reaganism were to win within the Republicans today, it would push the Republican Party to the left, to the center.

Harris calls for new debate - no response from Trump

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris challenges Donald Trump to another debate. This is reported by several media.

According to Harris' staff, she has agreed to a debate on CNN on October 23.

Donald Trump has not yet responded to CNN's invitation. He has previously claimed on social media that "there will be no third debate".
