The case of Gisèle Pélicot

Människor deltar i en demonstration för kvinnors rättigheter och till stöd för Giséle Pélicot, som misstänks ha drogats och våldtagits av sin man.
The case sparks debate: "Not all men - but many"

The case in which Giséle Pélicot is suspected of having been drugged by her husband and raped by at least fifty men has revived the debate about men's abuse of women in France. The Guardian reports.

In far too large parts of France, the Metoo movement and the fight against sexual abuse are still seen as part of "Anglo-Saxon puritanism", says Anne-Cécile Mailfert, president of the feminist organization Foundation des Femmes to the newspaper.

She believes that France is characterized "not only by a culture of rape, but a culture of freedom from responsibility".

- We are usually told that it is not all men, but as this case shows, there are at least many

The rapes mar the small village: "How is that possible?"

Several of the 50 men who are on trial for raping Gisèle Pélicot in Mazan, France, come from the area themselves. The case has shaken the small village to its foundations, and created great distrust between the 6,400 inhabitants, writes The Guardian. A 76-year-old retired teacher tells the newspaper that the whole thing is absolutely horrific.

- How could so many people be involved without anyone knowing it happened? she asks herself.

25-year-old Océane Martin tells the BBC that she knows at least three of the accused.

- You don't know who you can trust. I'm relieved to be moving out of here soon.

The accused men are between 26 and 74 years old. A further 30 or so suspects have not yet been identified.

Father-of-three admitted: 'Part of this nightmare'

A 44-year-old father of three pleaded guilty this week to raping Gisèle Pélicot in 2018, whose husband Dominique Pélicot let other men rape her while she was unconscious. According to Le Monde, the 44-year-old directly addressed 72-year-old Gisèle Pélicot in the courtroom and apologized.

- It is terrible that I was part of this nightmare. My apology won't change anything, but I still wanted to say sorry, the man said.

The father of three is one of 50 charged with rape at Pélicot. Several of the men risk 20 years in prison for aggravated rape.
