At 6:55 p.m. Friday night, South Carolina executed convicted murderer Freddie Eugene Owens, 46, the first to be executed in the state in 13 years. After Owens received the fatal injection, he said "goodbye" to his lawyer, to which she replied "goodbye." 13 minutes later, he was dead, according to CBS News.
The 46-year-old was convicted in 1999 for the murder of a woman in a convenience store, but has always denied involvement. Just days before the execution, a key witness changed his story, saying Owens was innocent. That didn't stop the state from going through with the death penalty.
The last execution in South Carolina took place in 2011. After that, the authorities were unable to replenish the stocks of preparations, because no manufacturer wanted to sell them openly.
