White House: Biden and Harris have not called for violence

The White House is denying that it was the rhetoric of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris that led suspected gunman Ryan Wesley Routh to plan to assassinate Donald Trump on Sunday.

- The president and vice president have always strongly condemned violence in all its forms. We have absolutely not encouraged violence, says White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre, according to AFP.

Donald Trump claims that it is Biden and Harris' "hateful rhetoric" that made him the likely target of what is suspected to have been a planned assassination attempt.

Lift for Takaichi - could become first woman to lead Japan

Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, LDP, is currently electing a new party chairman. The person chosen to succeed Fumio Kishida in the September 27 vote will also take over as Japan's prime minister.

Among the nine candidates, veteran Shigeru Ishiba was in the lead in this weekend's Nikkei Asia poll, with 26 percent of support. Former environment minister Shinjiro Koizumi came in second with 20 percent of the support.

In third place was incumbent minister Sanae Takaichi, who may become historic as the country's first female prime minister. Support for her has increased by five percentage points in one month to 16 percent. Nikkei writes that Takaichi sees himself as an heir to Shinzo Abe, who led the country for two terms.

Ukraine blacklists Russian-Canadian cinematographer

The Russian-Canadian cinematographer Anastasia Trofimova is blacklisted by Ukraine. The reason is her documentary film "Russians at war", which is accused of spreading Russian propaganda, writes AFP.

The film includes interviews with Russian soldiers on the front line. The film has caused quite a stir since its premiere earlier in September and has, among other things, received criticism for justifying Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Trofimova, in turn, has dismissed the criticism, saying that it is an "anti-war film" that depicts "ordinary guys" who are treated as cannon fodder.
