New Defence Secretary appointed – Dan Jarvis takes over
British Security Minister Dan Jarvis has been appointed as the new Defence Secretary in the UK, writes the BBC. He replaces John Healey who resigned last night in protest against Prime Minister Keir Starmer's financial priorities in defence.
He met Starmer this morning at Downing Street, together with the Chief of Defence Sir Richard Knighton.
"It is a huge honour and a privilege to work with them again," Jarvis writes on X after the meeting.
Minister after the defection: Must bring in more money
British defected minister Al Carns believes that Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government must find more money for defence, he tells the BBC.
Carns, who was Minister for the Armed Forces, announced his resignation yesterday in protest against Starmer's financial priorities in defence. He believes that too much focus is being placed on past wars, rather than the next one.
Carns resigned just hours after Defence Secretary John Healey announced his resignation for the same reason.
Opposition leader demands Starmer's resignation after defections
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch believes that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer should resign, she writes on X. The statement comes after two of Starmer's ministers chose to resign in protest at the government's financial priorities for defence.
"It is clear that the military has lost all confidence in Keir Starmer. A prime minister who cannot win the respect of our military cannot continue in office."
She believes that the country's national security must come before the prime minister's ego and that his time is up.
