Trump is blamed for shortcomings in the new Air Force One

The new US presidential plane, donated by Qatar, has been the subject of extensive scrutiny recently. According to information and image analysis, the Boeing plane lacks several of the safety systems that were on board the previous Air Force One.

After the NATO summit in Turkey, Donald Trump was advised not to fly home on the plane because it did not yet meet safety requirements.

A new review from the New York Times points to Trump as a major cause of the shortcomings. According to information to the newspaper, he pushed for the plane to be rebuilt before the 250th anniversary of the United States, which led to compromises on safety.

Trump is also said to have personally approved which features and safety systems would be included. The rapid reconstruction also meant that White House officials initially expected the plane to be used only for domestic flights.

Data: Attacks on drug boats have not reduced smuggling to the US

The US has carried out 67 attacks on suspected drug boats in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean since 2025. A total of 221 people have been killed. Donald Trump has claimed that the attacks have effectively put an end to drug smuggling at sea.

But according to informants and documents seen by the Washington Post, neither the Pentagon nor the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) share that picture.

DEA analyses show that the attacks have neither affected the price of cocaine nor smuggling to the US. Instead, smuggling routes have moved from international waters closer to the coasts, while smugglers are increasingly using larger boats instead of smaller ones.

“When you squeeze the balloon on one side, the air is always pushed out on the other side,” a DEA official told the Washington Post.

At a briefing last month, Pentagon officials also told policymakers in Washington that the attacks had not reduced the supply of cocaine or lowered its purity.
