Builders find gold worth nine million euros
Construction workers in Dendermonde, Belgium, got a surprise when they were renovating a house – in a chest in a basement wall were gold coins and gold bars worth a total of nine million euros.
The building belongs to the aid organization CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, reports Flemish public service channel VRT.
“This is something you experience once in a lifetime,” says Geert Hillaert of the organization, which together with the construction workers immediately reported the find to the police.
The gold has been taken into custody. It is unclear where it came from and prosecutors are opening an investigation.
“Everything right now points to some kind of fraudulent activity and that the gold has been hidden here,” says Hillaert.
People are advised not to visit the site in search of more gold. The police have already turned the building upside down, the Dendermonde police announced.

– Det här något man upplever en gång i livet, säger Geert Hillaert på organisationen som tillsammans med byggnadsarbetarna omedelbart anmälde fyndet till polisen.
Guldet har tagits i förvar. Det är oklart varifrån det kommer och åklagare öppnar en utredning.
– Allt pekar just nu mot att det rör sig om någon form av bedräglig verksamhet och att guldet har gömts här, säger Hillaert.
Människor uppmanas att inte uppsöka platsen i jakten på mer guld. Polisen har redan vänt upp och ner på byggnaden, meddelar polisen i Dendermonde.
