Donald Trump has threatened to make the Strait of Hormuz "American territory" when the conflict with Iran is over.

Now the American president is getting a rebuff from Iran.

In a speech on Friday, Trump claimed that he will "declare" the Strait of Hormuz as American when "Iran is defeated".

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has a different picture of the future of the strait.

"The Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian and will remain Iranian", writes Gharibabadi on X and added that the waterway will not be able to be conquered "with a tweet, an aircraft carrier, an order or an election speech".

Before the Iran war, 20 percent of global oil and gas trade passed through the Strait of Hormuz, which was open before the US and Israel launched the war against Iran.
