Iran: Strait of Hormuz cannot be conquered with a tweet or speech
Donald Trump must accept reality: the Strait of Hormuz has been, is and will remain under Iranian control. This is what Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi writes after Trump's pledge that he will soon declare the strait as American territory.
"The Strait of Hormuz cannot be conquered with a tweet, nor with an aircraft carrier - neither by issuing an order nor through a campaign speech," Gharibabadi writes on X.
As long as the US does not accept reality, Iran will continue to blockade the strait, because only Iran decides when it is open and closed, he adds.
The developments once again show how far apart the parties are, while both peace talks and shipping traffic are basically at a standstill, writes Reuters.
Trump: Soon I will make Hormuz part of the United States
Donald Trump intends to declare the Strait of Hormuz in Iran as American territory. He said this in a speech at the David S. Mack Center for Police Training in New York on Friday, according to Reuters.
–Very soon I will declare the Strait of Hormuz as American territory. That is true, he said, according to AFP.
He said it will happen “after the United States defeats Iran”.
Trump also urged Americans to accept higher gas prices as a cost to prevent “a very evil country” from having nuclear weapons, according to Reuters.
– We are doing the world a favor, not just ourselves, he said, adding that he would never apologize for attacking Iran on February 28.
Strait of Hormuz — the point
- Iran demands that the United States lift sanctions, withdraw forces and pay compensation for opening the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States opposes Iranian control and tariffs.
- Several ships have been attacked in the strait in recent weeks, leading to continued high oil prices and concerns about global trade.
- Gulf states and European countries have discussed voluntary fees similar to the Strait of Malacca, but the United States and Iran are far apart on the future administration of the strait.
- The United States and Iran resumed attacks on each other after the ceasefire collapsed on July 7. Iran has responded to US attacks by striking US targets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
- Before the Iran-Iraq war, the strait was open. At that time, 20 percent of global oil and gas trade passed through the strait.
