Liberia accepts deportees from the US
Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 deported migrants from the US, the West African country announced.
The migrants will arrive within a year, the first 20 as early as this week, according to Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah. Among them are Africans as well as citizens from North and South America and the Caribbean.
The US has made similar agreements with a long list of other countries, including Rwanda and El Salvador. Thousands of people have been deported to countries they do not come from.
The measure allows the US to deport people who cannot be sent back to their home countries for security reasons. According to Liberia, the migrants are able to seek asylum in Liberia, or leave the country at any time they wish.
