US sanctions ICC judges
The US is imposing sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane, Japan, and Judge Abdoulaye Seye, Senegal.
The sanctions can be seen as part of the US campaign against the court, which the Trump administration considers “politicized.”
“These individuals have been directly involved in the effort to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute public figures whose governments have not consented to the ICC’s jurisdiction,” reads a statement from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Several Republican senators already called for sanctions against the ICC two years ago in response to the court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The sanctions undermine international law, the ICC responds.
“When legal actors are threatened for applying the law, it is the international order itself that is at risk,” it reads.
