Middle East Crisis Israel-Syria Relations

US criticizes Israel for “unnecessary escalation”

The US expresses concern over the attack on a military airport that Syria accuses Israel of carrying out in the country, several news agencies report.

On X, Tom Barrack, US ambassador to Turkey and special envoy to Syria, writes that they are “deeply concerned” about the attack. Barrack believes that it is “an unnecessary escalation that does not improve stability in the region”.

Since Syria’s former dictator Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in December 2024, Israel has carried out several attacks on the country, whose new government is skeptical.

In his X post, Barrack writes that Israel is behind the attack, but this has not yet been confirmed by Israel.

Syria accuses Israel of attack on military airport

On Tuesday, the Syrian military airport Abu Duhur was subjected to an airstrike, TT reports. According to the AFP news agency, Syria is now accusing Israel of being behind the attack.

Abu Duhur has not been in use since 2012, but it is still guarded by the Syrian military. AFP writes that a Syrian human rights organization states that the attack took place just a few days after a Turkish military delegation visited the airport.

The Israeli military has declined to comment on the accusation. According to AFP, the attack did not result in any deaths or injuries.

Israel has attacked Syria several times since the overthrow of former dictator Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
