The first group of Danish conscripts is on site in Greenland to practice in the terrain there, as part of the expanded conscription program that Denmark began in February.
The conscripts arrived in the Greenlandic capital Nuuk in early August, the Danish defense writes on its website.
Some of the conscripts will be stationed in Nuuk and others in Kangerlussuaq, which is north of the Arctic Circle. The landscape there, with open spaces and rocky slopes, is markedly different from the terrain where conscripts normally train.
“The world situation makes it necessary for us to get used to Arctic terrain,” says Laura, captain and company commander for the conscripts.
