Prison sentences following migrant disaster in the English Channel
Several men have been sentenced to prison for contributing to a drowning incident in the English Channel that claimed the lives of 31 people.
The disaster, which occurred off the coast of Calais in November 2021, is the deadliest accident involving migrants attempting to travel from France to the UK.
The convicted men are described as human smugglers, and the French court ruled that the accident was caused by "individuals driven by greed, with absolutely no regard for human life."
Six of them received prison sentences ranging from six to ten years, while seven others received sentences ranging from a six-month suspended sentence to four years in prison.
