EU Parliament seeks to postpone methane regulations
A right-wing majority in the European Parliament wants to postpone stricter regulations on methane emissions until 2030.
The European Commission has proposed a one-year delay to the rules concerning the monitoring and reporting of methane emissions. However, a majority in the Parliament—consisting primarily of the Christian-democratic conservative EPP, alongside three far-right groups (PFE, ECR, and ESN)—wants to go even further, supporting a three-year postponement.
"An absolute scandal... The Commission and the Parliament are caving in to pressure from the fossil fuel lobby and blackmail from the Trump administration," argues German Green Party MEP Jutta Paulus.
A compromise must now be reached through negotiations with EU member states, which are expected to agree on their position during a meeting of energy ministers next week.
