Tariff Announcement May Provide Boost to Embattled Senator in Maine
Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine may have received a much-needed assist from the Trump administration with just over a week left until the midterm elections, reports Politico.
Maine shares a border with Canada, and Collins has been openly critical of the tariffs imposed on the neighboring nation. However, on Friday, it was announced that relief would be granted for a range of products affecting the agricultural sector.
"Producers are an important part of our state’s economy and support our rural and coastal communities," says Collins.
An aggregate of several opinion polls by Real Clear Politics gives Democrat Troy Jackson a narrow lead ahead of the November 3 election.
Analysis: Democrats Heading Toward Victory, Yet Torn Apart
The United States could find itself in a kind of political stalemate if the Democrats achieve major gains in the midterm elections—even if Donald Trump does not follow through on his threats to claim election fraud. This is the assessment of Michael Hirsh in an analysis for *Foreign Policy*.
The current party leaders in the Senate and the House of Representatives have low approval ratings and are rejected by younger Democratic voters, he writes. According to Hirsh, the party lacks a national figurehead, and the primary elections saw progressive candidates clashing with moderates.
"The Democrats appear to be tearing apart ideologically, rendering a party—which is characterized by division even under normal circumstances—even more fractured." Callum Jones writes in The Guardian that the polling outlook appears bleak for the Republicans, though he notes a historical pattern in which the president’s party loses ground during midterm elections. Typically, the governing party tries to convince voters that it is on the right track; however, the Trump administration seems more inclined to shift the subject, he writes.
Jones points out, for instance, that Vice President JD Vance has attempted to frame the protests in France as a domestic political issue—even as other matters rank higher on the agenda for voters.
