Canada-Europe Relations
Sources: German opposition to Canada’s EU status

At least eight EU member states, led by Germany, oppose Canada’s newly acquired status as an “associate member” of the EU, diplomatic sources have told Politico.

According to the sources, the objection concerns the title itself, rather than the closer ties with Canada. These countries—which include France, Germany, and Italy—dislike the fact that the EU has applied a label to this new relationship without first clarifying what it actually entails.

“It’s the wrong order of operations. We make an announcement, and then we figure out what it means,” one source said.

Several of the countries are also reportedly upset that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen did not consult them before the announcement was made.
