Over 200 remain in custody following protests
Of the 2,700 people arrested across France in connection with the protests and riots over the past weekend, 217 remain in custody, according to Minister of Justice Gérald Darmanin.
The Minister of Justice notes that half of the more than 200 individuals being held are first-time offenders.
"This shows that prosecutors and judges are detaining people who were previously unknown to the justice system," says Gérald Darmanin, speaking outside a correctional facility in Fleury-Mérogis, south of Paris.
France’s judicial system has been working expeditiously on its criminal investigations, Darmanin points out.
"Decisions within the justice system are being carried out in a very firm manner."
The Minister of Justice has promised expedited legal proceedings for the arrested protesters.
Further demonstrations are planned in France for this coming weekend.
