New, large-scale protests against the high cost of living are expected in Italy today. There is a heavy police presence in Rome and Milan.

Thousands of police officers and soldiers are patrolling the streets of Rome and Milan this Saturday. Surveillance is being bolstered by drones, which will monitor the expressions of discontent from above.

From Milan, the public broadcaster Rai reports that shop windows have been boarded up and the city is on "maximum alert," following scenes reminiscent of a war zone last week. During those events, demonstrators clashed with police, luxury stores were looted, and fires were set. The police responded with tear gas, water cannons, and arrests.

Furthermore, the government has issued a decree making "violent participation" in a demonstration punishable by up to five years in prison.

New protests, marches, and strikes are also expected on Saturday in cities including Bologna, Genoa, Turin, and Florence.
