Hungary repeals anti-LGBTQ legislation
The Hungarian parliament has voted to repeal a law banning the "promotion of homosexuality" among minors.
The law was introduced in 2021 under then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and included a ban on advertising that "depicts or promotes," among other things, gender reassignment and homosexuality.
The law’s original purpose was to toughen penalties for child abuse, but it was subsequently expanded to include a ban on "promoting homosexuality."
The new government, led by Péter Magyar, submitted the proposal in September. In April of this year, the European Court of Justice ruled that the law violated EU law.
This marks a significant first step away from the previous government's restrictive LGBTQ policies.
