Speaker sees risks in live-streamed execution
US House Speaker Mike Johnson—a Republican—has joined the ranks of those skeptical about live-streaming the execution of convicted murderer Nidal Hasan.
"The risk is creating a video that could serve as a recruitment tool for future terrorists," he told CBS.
Last week, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth raised the possibility of making the execution accessible to the public—a move that, according to sources cited by several media outlets, would entail a live broadcast.
However, several top Republicans do not appear quite as enthusiastic about the idea. President Donald Trump has stated that nothing has been decided, and Vice President JD Vance has said he believes a broadcast will not happen; now, objections have also been raised by Speaker Mike Johnson.
"We have to carefully consider the political implications of all this," he says.
Nidal Hasan is scheduled to be executed by firing squad.
