Increased Swedish contribution to NATO operations
Sweden is to contribute up to 5,350 personnel to NATO’s deterrence and defense efforts in 2027. This is proposed by the government in a bill.
The proposal entails a maximum of 3,900 personnel in ground units, up to 850 in naval units, and up to 600 in air and air defense units.
Regarding ground units, the contribution primarily involves participation in NATO’s battlegroup in Latvia and NATO’s military presence in northern Finland. The Swedish contribution is planned to consist of 600 personnel for each mission, though the numbers may be increased if necessary.
Compared to 2026, the number of personnel available for NATO deterrence and defense is increasing from a maximum of 3,000 to a maximum of 5,350.
