September ranks as second-warmest on record
This year's September was the second-warmest on record, according to the EU's climate service, Copernicus.
Global temperatures reached 1.63 degrees above pre-industrial levels, making September the second consecutive month with temperatures exceeding 1.5 degrees. Coming months are also expected to remain above this threshold, and the trend is projected to continue into 2027.
In Europe, the dry and warm conditions that characterized the summer persisted. With an average temperature of 16.26 degrees, the month was the third-warmest September on record for Europe as a whole. In Western Europe, it tied with September 2023 as the warmest on record.
At the same time, sea surface temperatures outside the polar regions were the highest ever recorded for September.
