China imposes sanctions on ministers following support for Taiwan
China is imposing sanctions on government officials from Paraguay and Belize.
The reason cited by China's Foreign Ministry is their diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
The measures target Paraguay’s Minister of Communications, Gustavo Villate, and Belize’s Foreign Minister, Francis Fonseca. The sanctions include the freezing of property and assets in China, the rejection of visa applications, and a ban on trading with Chinese organizations.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the politicians had "taken a series of outrageous actions and made statements that harm China's core interests."
Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with only a handful of countries, including Paraguay and Belize. China views the island as part of its territory and has been accused of attempting to isolate Taiwan.
