Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promises to call for elections if Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire.

But the Kremlin gives the thumbs-down—one day is enough.

"I don't think he deserves any respite," says Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Zelenskyy’s proposal regarding elections came on Sunday after US President Donald Trump criticized him, stating that Ukraine "should get a new president."

On Monday, Russia announced that it could agree to a one-day ceasefire to allow Ukraine to hold a presidential election.

"If they really want to hold elections in Kyiv, then the Russian President—the Commander-in-Chief—is prepared to order that no attacks be carried out against Ukraine on election day; specifically on election day itself," says Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
