Orbán’s central bank chief arrested
György Matolcsy, the long-serving former governor of Hungary’s central bank, has been arrested, according to his lawyer as reported by the news outlet Telex.
Matolcsy is considered a close ally of Viktor Orbán, who led the country until this past spring. Orbán’s successor as prime minister, Péter Magyar, has vowed to hold former officials accountable for corruption and mismanagement.
In Matolcsy’s case, the allegations involve embezzlement and fraud, according to his lawyer.
Matolcsy served as central bank governor from 2013 to 2025, and previously held ministerial positions in Orbán’s governments.
