Norwegian politician smuggled drones into Ukraine
A member of the Norwegian Storting (parliament) illegally smuggled drones equipped with thermal cameras into Ukraine.
In 2023, the Conservative Party (Høyre) MP Peter Frølich, acting through his organization "Fritt Ukraina" (Free Ukraine), attempted to transport a number of drones equipped with thermal cameras via ferry. However, the shipment was intercepted by Norwegian customs, as it violated a law dating back to the 1950s.
Frølich then appealed directly to the government, emphasizing that the situation was critical and that any delay could cost Ukrainian soldiers their lives.
Ultimately, "Fritt Ukraina" managed to get the drones into the war-torn country. The following day, the organization received word from the Norwegian government that it would expedite the handling of the matter. The regulations were eventually amended, and it is now legal for Norwegians to send civilian drones to Ukraine.
Frølich does not regret breaking the law.
