Steve Witkoff has arrived in Russia for further peace talks.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is taking a tougher tone toward Ukraine—while speaking favorably of Russia.
On Tuesday, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Oslo to discuss the war in Ukraine.
Witkoff has now traveled on to Saint Petersburg, Russia, for further discussions.
The meeting in Oslo was also attended by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
Following the meeting, Stubb expressed optimism regarding peace efforts, suggesting that the talks were moving in the right direction, Reuters reports.
Trump criticizes Zelenskyy
At the same time, the relationship between the U.S. and Ukraine has deteriorated significantly.
In recent days, Donald Trump has leveled harsh criticism at Zelenskyy, accusing him of hindering peace negotiations.
He has also suggested that someone else should represent Ukraine in the talks.
Meanwhile, Trump has spoken favorably of Russia, stating that they "have behaved well" regarding Ukraine, according to Reuters.
Accusations against the U.S. over withheld support
Ukraine has also accused the U.S. of withholding critical military support.
Kyiv has raised concerns regarding restrictions on the Starshield satellite system, as well as the failure to deliver American air defense systems that had already been paid for by European nations. The US denies that the support has been deliberately limited.
According to NRK, Jonas Gahr Støre has announced that Witkoff will return to Oslo after the meeting in St. Petersburg.
Discussions regarding Ukraine will then continue.
